The University of Messina belongs to the top-30 Italian Universities according to data published by THE World University Ranking in 2019 (occupying the 27th position) and is one of the more active and emerging realities in the panorama of Computer Science in Italy. According to SCOPUS SciVal it is the 12th Italian University considering the Scholarly Output indicator evaluated in the period 2017-2019 related to the computer science (miscellaneous) subject category. 

The Data Science Study Programme offered by the MIFT Department of the University of Messina is the first one entirely carried out in the English language by an Italian University.

Professors of the Master's Degree have an intense scientific activity focused on emerging research topics in the area of Computer Science such as distributed systems, software engineering, computer security, Cloud/Edge/Fog computing, Internet of Things (IoT), numerical analysis, artificial intelligence (machine and deep learning) and Big Data management and analytics. Furthermore, different research groups are linked to the Master's Degree making the subjects studied in this innovative and cutting-edge.

Prof. Massimo Villari (FCRLAB), Coordinator of the Bachelors' Degree in Computer Science at the MIFT Department of the University of Messina, was recognized by a study published in 2014 in the prestigious IEEE Cloud Computing Transactions journal as one of the top 25 World-Wide active researchers working in the Cloud computing area. 

The Master's Degree has different agreements with prestigious enterprises (such as Oracle and Red Hat) that allow students to acquire professional certifications.

Furthermore, the Master's Degree is also placed in an active context where the MIFT Department of the Univerisity of Messina operates in different international and national research projects in both academic and industrial domains focusing on emerging computer science topics. This offers students many scholarship opportunities and to have close contact with the work world through enterprise and scientific research internships during which can be developed an experimental thesis that represents a launchpad for their professional career.
